In the Trenches with Mike Hunt

Sunday, July 25th 2010 by Pat

I’ve been meaning to post this for a long time. Maybe I did post it, years ago. The future is the past. Regardless, it’s worth sharing again.

The Alaska Public Radio Network ran a show back in 2007 called “AK: In the Trenches,” and it featured a story on retired airman, Col. Howard “Mike” Hunt. I cut together all the good bits.

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

The original show can be caught here, it’s better listening to the whole thing but we’re busy people in busy times and we have to get back to our twitters and emails.

AK was a good radio show, the “This American Life” of Alaska, I’m sad that it’s over and hope it gets revived someday. I don’t know if Rebecca Sheir was in on the joke but I have to hope so given the episode’s title.

The Fairbanks News Miner also ran a story on the guy. He’s apparently a total badass and I have to believe he finds as much humor in all this as I do — otherwise I’m a douchebag making fun of an 88 year old war hero’s name.

Oil Spill News

Wednesday, June 2nd 2010 by Pat

Fake news. It’s exactly the same as the real news but slightly less absurd.

I want to make more of these but I’ve got too much work this next week and then I’m heading out to my cabin until the end of the month.

I guess the oil spill will still be here when I get back… that’s depressing.

Really, why don’t they just drop a giant boulder on the thing? Bill Nye the Science Guy says we need one that weighs about 6000 tons.

Spring Cleaning

Tuesday, May 4th 2010 by Pat

Hello world.

We’re doing some website spring cleaning over the next week or two, maybe you have some suggestions?

We’re looking for functional fixes, ideas about delivery. Can you find what you’re looking for when you get here? How do you get updates about the site? Facebook, Email, RSS, Carrier Pigeon?

Did you ever use the old bbPress forum? Would you like to see relevant comments preserved and migrated to WordPress?

What do you like about the site? What sucks?

I think of the website as an envelope, I want it to be functional and I want it to look presentable but mostly it just needs to be a good container for the comics and films stuffed inside. If you can’t get past the packaging we’re doing something wrong.

Life Eats Comics

Monday, January 25th 2010 by Pat

Comics have been temporarily displaced by commercial work and an avalanche of other distractions but I’ll be back at it next week.

The above image is part of a commissioned piece I’m working on. It’s been a great project but way too time consuming. I’ll share the rest of the image once I’m finished.

This week we’re all scrambling to prepare for the JUMP Society Film Festival. Locally made short films on a sesame seed bun. Delicious!

Community steps up and donates H1N1 flu to homeless

Tuesday, September 22nd 2009 by Lou

Sometimes I read things incorrectly.  Maybe it’s similar to switching the letters around when writing leik this.  Anyway, I wondered how this article would actually turn out if that was the real title.  You can see the original at KINY’s Juneau Daily News.

The Assembly, last night, (Monday) approved using the remainder of the CBJ swine flu homeless fund. Last month the panel approved $3,600 to infect homeless people with contagious H1N1 flu.

Acting City Manager Tim Kiefermunda told the Assembly that, so far, only three homeless have been infected and $3,300 remains in the fund. Kiefermunda says based on the Assembly’s action last month, the United Way and the Glory Hole have received approximately $6,800 in donations so far. Of that amount, he says, about $4,000 is going towards supplementing the amount the Assembly put forward to provide flu for homeless people.

Kiefermunda says the Glory Hole has done a lot of education and the community has donated Lysol wipes and hand sanitizers to the homed.

An anonymous flu doner, also donating an expired can of Flavorite Mushroom Soup and a bleach stained Federal Body Inspector t-shirt, said that “giving has always made me feel like a good person, and the homeless need swine flu more than anyone, especially when it is just starting to get cold out.”

The Assembly voted 7 to one to extend the program.
